Olympus has revealed its smallest DSLR yet in the compact shape of the E-420. Claimed to be among the smallest and lightest DSLRs, the follow-up to the E-410 boasts the same 10-megapixel sensor, with an expanded 2.7-inch LCD screen on the rear.
The E-420's vital statistics are a 130x90x53mm frame and a weight of 380g, although early reports suggest that the handgrip is a vast improvement on its predecessor.
As well as a compact frame, the E-420 brings compact features to the entry-level DSLR market. Live View support lets users set up their shots on the LCD screen with 100% field of view, rather than using the viewfinder, and while DSLR enthusiasts may baulk at the inclusion of face detection technology, compact camera users making the step up will find it an attractive selling point.
28 shooting modes, including 18 scene select modes - will help ease DSLR newcomers into using their new camera, which can fire off up to 3.5fps at ISO 100-1600.
The standard kit lens with the E-420 is a 14-42mm f3.5-5.6 Zuiko Digital unit, although for a true compact DSLR solution, Olympus is pushing Zuiko's 25mm f2.8 'pancake' lens with its 35-50mm equivalent focal length. The company has also produced a retro brown leather case and strap to complete the package.
The Olympus E-420 will be available from late April 2008, priced at £339.99 body only and £379.99 with the 14-42mm Zuiko lens. The 25mm 'pancake' lens kit will cost £449.99, while a double-lens solution (including the 14-42mm and a 40-150mm 1:4.0-5.6 Zuiko zoom) is priced at £479.99.
