Canon's EOS 400D was the best selling DSLR in the UK during 2007, and the only DSLR to feature in a top 10 dominated by compact cameras.
The report from market research company GfK also revealed that more than 146,000 400D bodies were sold in 2007, and that the 10-megapixel unit was the Japanese manufacturer's best selling camera, beating the compact Digital IXUS 70 into fourth place and the Digital IXUS 75 into ninth.
Sony, Fuji, Casio and Kodak compacts made up the rest of the top 10, but somewhat surprisingly, seventies favourite Vivitar claimed pole position with its Vivicam 3105s.
Despite missing out on the number one spot, Canon UK marketing director Guido Jacobs was delighted with the hat-trick on cameras in the top 10. "No other camera manufacturer featured in GfK's list as much as Canon," he said.
"With consumers having the choice of over 1050 different digital camera models on the UK market last year, this is a great achievement and one which we hope to build on in 2008."
A spokesperson for Canon said the EOS 400D will continue to sell alongside the eagerly awaited 12-megapixel EOS 450D, which is expected to hit retailers' shelves before the end of the month. Canon is currently offering £45 cashback on the £399 400D for purchases before the end of June.
Worldwide digital camera sales are estimated to have reached 126 million units in 2007, an increase of 18% on 2006. Hopes for further growth within the industry are mainly focused on DSLR cameras, sales of which are growing fastest.
